A glass of wine to complete that special evening? A relaxing aperitif among friends? A restaurant where you can savor the taste of Capri’s flavor-packed traditional cuisine? Take the flight of steps which lead from the Piazzetta to the proto-cathedral of Santo Stefano and, inside the narrow, arched alleyway almost directly opposite, you’ll find exactly what you’ve been looking for: Donna Rachele.
Open until the early hours of the morning, even in the heart of winter, Donna Rachele is the ideal place if you are looking for an intimate and peaceful spot where you can enjoy excellent local food and wine.
Slow or fast, Donna Rachele’s specialties are a true treat for the taste buds.
In the restaurant, customers choose from a selection of Capri’s culinary classics, prepared with the freshest of seasonal ingredients, and just the slightest pinch of contemporary flair.
In the wine bar, clients relax on the comfortable benches and barstools, enjoying a glass of wine, nibbling on an irresistible selection of appetizers. Smoking is not allowed inside the wine bar or restaurant, but tobacco aficionados are welcome to puff away to their heart’s content outside on the balconies, which overlook the rooftops of Capri.
At Donna Rachele the passion for good food runs in the family. The restaurant is named after, Rachele, the great grandmother of Loredana, the restaurant owner. In the 19th century, Rachele ran a small eatery in Anacapri, which she named ‘La Murena’ in honor of her husband, who was known for his skill in catching ‘murene’ - the tasty, although rather unsightly, moray fish which inhabit the sea surrounding Capri. Word of Rachele’s culinary prowess reached the court of the then King of Italy, Umberto II, who insisted on eating in the restaurant during his next visit to Capri.
Unfortunately, La Murena was destroyed during the Second World War. Today, a portrait of a smiling Donna Rachele gazes down over diners eating in her great granddaughter’s wine-bar.
Donna Rachele is located in a tiny arched alleyway in the historic center of Capri, just a few steps away from the Piazzetta, the square in which the world’s beautiful people habitually gather.
Donna Rachele is open all year round (yes - even in winter!)
